Los Angeles-based SOKAMBA is a collective of artists that produces live multimedia art shows, creative educational workshops and performing arts classes. The collective is made up of a diverse group of dancers, acrobats, actors, musicians, sculptors, animators, cinematographers, XR creators and software engineers. SOKAMBA has been facilitating cross-media creation since its inception in 2012.
The Mission of SOKAMBA is to use the fusion of interdisciplinary art and technology to produce experiences that appeal to a multitude of senses and awaken a feeling of harmony and community among diverse audiences. The SOKAMBA community is always eager to push boundaries while nurturing a collaborative working-environment.Petrichor (A Sonic Journey) [Deluxe Edition] has been in the works for about 4.5 years, all told, as of its release date! It represents the collaboration of a group of LA-based composers and WORLD-based instrumentalists - and serves as the score to Sokamba's 2018 dome show, titled Petrichor.
The Deluxe Edition sees a remaster of the original for higher fidelity, which was written & produced over only 3 months, beginning in April 2018. Many of the pieces are collaboratively created, and involve improvisational composition techniques. The genres float by effortlessly - as a listener you're guided through an ambient, sound-bath vibe to a folk energy, all the way through the underbelly of electronica, dub, breaks, and glitch music, and emerge out the other side after the 16th track asking yourself if "genre" is even a concept worth holding onto anymore.
The team is led by composer/orchestrator Justin Bell and producer/xR-type Christian Robinson (AKA Correlator), & features Kennedy Williams, Landon Fleischman (AKA Boy Willows), Casey Astorino (AKA Astrina), Aaron Reihs, Michael Blasky, Nick Kennerly, Professor Saracuru, Emer Kinsella, Katina Mitchell, Stevie Rae Gibbs, Ethan Chilton, Catherine McMurray, Adam Barnett (AKA Newfaces), Elise Napier, Jheanelle Garriques, Corbin Jones, & Aija Matteson. The album was painstakingly engineered by Austin Shaw, and many of the sound samples used for the production process were recorded by Griffin Molly. This team, under the direction of Rissi Zimmerman, worked in collaboration with the departments of dance, animation, interactive media within the Sokamba community to create this sonic world.
Special thanks goes to the entire Sokamba community, and a special shoutout to Jamie Lew for making amazing cover art for the project, to Dylan Pham & Stephen Keys Davis (AKA Kiavi) for their assistance with the release, to Skyler Garn for his energy and commitment to community, to all those (housemates, the Vortex Dome Crew, our Families) who served any kind of creative and facilitatory role. And THANK YOU for bringing your ears, heart, and spirit along for the ride :)
